Established in 1994, Kerman Morris Architects is a small, woman-owned business recognized by the City and County of San Francisco as a Green Business.

The firm brings a deep commitment to excellence in design and creating responsive, well-crafted places for living and working. Principals Elizabeth Kerman-Morris and Toby Morris have built a practice that specializes in a range of residential developments, including infill housing, affordable housing, custom homes, and mixed-use projects as well as developing projects themselves.

Edward "Toby" Morris

Toby Morris’s work is informed both by his early work experience as a carpenter and his research in housing development, affordability, policy, and energy efficiency. Before co-founding Kerman Morris Architects in 1994, Toby worked for firms in San Francisco, Boston, and Portland, Maine, designing homes and multi-family housing, mixed-use projects, institutional facilities, and civic buildings. He has taught graduate courses in housing design and development at UC Berkeley, and has been published by the Institute of Urban and Regional Development (IURD) on topics about non-profit housing development production and specific working strategies of Bay Area Non-Profits. He is a registered architect in California.

Elizabeth Kerman-Morris

Prior to establishing her own practice in 1992 (which would later evolve into Kerman Morris Architects), Elizabeth Kerman-Morris designed a range of custom residential, affordable-housing, multi-family housing, institutional, and commercial projects for small and large firms in Boston, San Francisco, and Portland, Maine. As Staff Architect for San Francisco Architectural Heritage, Elizabeth provided design services to neighborhood non-profit housing developers (Mission Housing Development Corp. and Bernal Heights Housing Corp.) under a CDBG grant. Later, working with a leading preservation architect, she developed an expertise in the preservation and adaptive reuse of historic buildings. Elizabeth brings strong interior architecture and material detailing skills to her craft, and works closely with owners, developers and contractors to realize exemplary projects. She is a registered architect in California.
